How Traitpilot works — and why it's built the way it is
Traitpilot is built on three parts that work together: a research-based personality test, a short set of questions about your actual situation, and an AI-driven analysis that weaves the two into a personal report. None of these parts are unique on their own — it's the combination that makes the difference.
The personality test
We use IPIP-NEO-120, an open and well-established version of the Big Five model with 120 questions. It measures five broad personality dimensions — Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Emotional Instability — along with 30 underlying facets that show where the real nuances lie. It's the facets that make two people with the same domain scores fundamentally different, and it's the facets that make the report useful.
Big Five is not the most famous personality test, but it is the most studied. It has been validated in thousands of studies, across dozens of countries and languages. It doesn't sort you into a "type" — it places you on five continuous scales with six facets each. That makes it possible to describe personality with precision rather than labels.
The Swedish and English test items come from an open, MIT-licensed project with millions of completed tests. Scoring is deterministic and runs in a separate backend function with automated unit tests — it doesn't depend on AI or interpretation.
The situation questions
This is where Traitpilot does something most personality tests don't: we ask what you're actually struggling with right now.
You answer five short questions about your situation: what you want help with, what's getting in the way, how much time and energy you realistically have, and what concrete next step you want to take. The questions are designed to be short but specific enough to give the analysis real direction.
Why? Personality without context is a map without a you-are-here marker. The same personality profile can lead to completely different recommendations depending on whether you're dealing with procrastination, boundary-setting, or a major decision. It's your situation that determines which parts of your profile matter most right now.
The report
The report is generated by a calibrated AI model that receives both your test results and your situation responses. The prompt that controls the report has been carefully designed and tested — it includes rules for how data should be interpreted, what terminology to use, how exercises should be calibrated to your capacity, and how the report should be honest about its own limitations.
The report contains three Perspectives — testable hypotheses about why a particular pattern shows up in your life — and three Exercises that are concrete enough to carry out during the week. Every Perspective and every Exercise is grounded in specific facets from your profile and in what you described in the situation questions. Nothing in the report is generic.
What it's not
Traitpilot is not a diagnosis, not therapy, and not a substitute for professional support. The report is a reflection tool — it gives you a clearer language for your patterns and concrete things to try. If you need more than that, the most important next step is often to talk to a person, not to take more tests.
